The Dallas Mavericks will retire forward Mark Aguirre's No. 24 jersey on Jan. 29, the team announced Monday.
The Mavericks made Aguirre the No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft and he earned three All-Star selections in eight seasons with the franchise.
Aguirre, now 65, held the team record for points in a season with 2,330 in 1983-84 until Luka Doncic broke it with 2,370 in 2023-24.
'Wow, this is too much for me,' Aguirre said, per the team website, when he learned of the honor. 'My kids always wanted to witness this. Was this ever going to happen? I'll talk to them all night tonight. Daddy's jersey is retired. Wow, man. This is big. This is huge.'
Aguirre ranks third in Mavericks history in points (13,930), trailing Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki (31,560) and Rolando Blackman (16,643).
He will be the fifth Dallas player to have his number retired, joining Nowitzki (41), Blackman (22), Brad Davis (15) and Derek Harper (12).
He averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 923 career games (639 starts) with the Mavericks (1981-89), Detroit Pistons (1989-93) and Los Angeles Clippers (1993-94). He won back-to-back NBA championships with Detroit in 1989 and 1990.
