The Athletics placed highlight-reel center fielder Denzel Clarke on the 10-day injured Tuesday due to a right adductor strain.
Clarke underwent an MRI exam on Monday to determine the severity. The move is retroactive to Monday.
The Athletics also placed infielder Max Muncy (fractured right hand) on the IL on Tuesday. He was hit by a pitch in Monday's 7-2 to the Texas Rangers.
A's manager Mark Kotsay said Clarke would be sidelined at least two weeks before being able to start his rehab.
Clarke was injured during Sunday's game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Clarke, 25, made his major league debut on May 23 and quickly established himself as one of the best defensive players in the game.
He has earned MLB's Electric Play of the Week honors on four occasions since being promoted.
He twice has climbed outfield fences to make dazzling catches to rob home runs. He also has made diving catches, and another stellar play involved him sprinting well into the gap in left-center and slamming into the wall as he made the catch.
Clarke is a work in progress as a hitter. He is batting .230 with three homers and eight RBIs in 47 games.
Muncy, 22, is batting .215 in 59 games. The rookie has nine homers and 23 RBIs.
The Athletics also recalled outfielders Carlos Cortes and Colby Thomas from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Cortes, 28, is batting .322 with 17 homers and 77 RBIs in 71 games at Las Vegas. He hasn't played in any major league games.
Thomas, 24, is slated to bat eighth and play right field for the A's on Tuesday night. He was 1-for-11 in five games for the Athletics earlier this season.
In 82 games for Las Vegas, Thomas batted .291 with 18 homers and 74 RBIs.
