ESPN's Tim Kurkjian is the 2022 winner of the Baseball Writers' Association of America Career Excellence Award, the most prestigious prize in baseball journalism.
Kurkjian, who turns 65 on Friday, will be honored at the National Baseball Hall of Fame during induction weekend in July. He will be recognized in the "Scribes Mikemen" exhibit in the library of the Cooperstown, N.Y., landmark.
He received 211 votes on the 375 ballots cast by BBWAA members. The award has been voted upon annually since 1962 and originally was named for J.G. Taylor Spink, the longtime editor of The Sporting News, and was renamed earlier this year.
Kurkjian, a native of Bethesda, Md., began his career as a sportswriter in 1979. He was a baseball beat writer at publications including The Dallas Morning News and The Baltimore Sun, as well as the senior baseball writer at Sports Illustrated before joining ESPN in 1998.
He has won two Emmy Awards and written three books about baseball.
