Tigers are one of the marvelous predators in the world. These mysterious, discreet, and excellent camouflagers of nature are very rare and hard to spot while you are out on an adventure to spot them. But India, with one of the densest populations of tigers in the world, offers you the best bet to spot a tiger in their natural habitat during the Tiger Safaris in India.
Tigers are a highly endangered species in India; even with a recent hike of 8% population over the last three years, they are still fiercely protected by the government under the Project Tiger Act that was introduced in 1973. At the time, Tigers were dwindling in population, and there were a mere 400 odd tigers all over India. Hunting and poaching of Tigers were at a very alarming pace, and therefore tigers needed to be protected under reserved areas called Tiger Reserves. These tiger reserves are usually situated inside a National Park.
Tiger reserves, along with the Tourism department, offer some of the best Tiger Safaris in India. The chances of spotting a tiger are higher when you pick a National Park with the most number of tigers.
Below are some of the most populous tiger reserves in India where you have the best chance to spot a tiger during a tiger safari:
Jim Corbett National Park has the most number of tigers in all of India, with a whopping 238 tigers as of 2019. Jim Corbett National Park was founded by the Wildlife Conservationist Dr Jim Corbett and was the first tiger reserve in India. It is situated in Uttarakhand in Northern India.
Bandipur National Park lies in tandem with the Mudumalai Tiger reserve and has shared territory with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is the second-highest populous tiger reserve and is also part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve Project. It is an amazing tourist destination and has a very cool climate.
Nagarhole National Park lies alongside the Bandipur and Mudumalai National parks and has very extended borders with these National Parks. The three of them combined occupy a major chunk of reserved thick forests that serve as the perfect habitat for tigers. Nagarhole is situated in Karnataka.
Kanha National Park and Bandhavgarh National Park share their borders across Madhya Pradesh over dense forests. Acres of land spanning amazing flora and varied fauna with a good number of Royal Bengal tigers make this a perfect place for your tiger safari destination. Kanha National Park is also the inspiration for the famous 'Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling.
Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the massive National Parks in India, with acres of dense forests. This National Park shares its borders, with Kanha National Park on one side and Pench National Park on the other. Bandhavgarh has a good number of tigers, making it a great option for tiger safaris.
Tadoba Andhari Tiger reserve spreads over the Tadoba and Andhari region of Maharashtra and is the biggest in all of the state. It houses a dense Tiger population making it apt for Tiger Safaris. The climate is also quite favorable for tourists.
Ranthambore National Park is situated in Rajasthan around the famous Ranthambore fort ruins. Earlier known as the poaching ground for the king of Mewar, this lush forest is now preserved as a tiger reserve with amazing fauna and flora and offers a great tiger spotting place for tourists.
Listed as a populous Tiger reserve and a World Heritage Site of India, Kaziranga National Park has some of the most exotic animals, including the coveted Rhinoceros and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga offers amazing safaris where one can spot Rhinos, Tigers, wild Asiatic elephants, and large crocodiles. This exotic national park is situated in the Assam region of East India.
Sundarbans is not only a National park for tigers but many other exotic animals and amphibians such as saltwater crocodiles, endangered species such as Olive Ridley Turtles, Ganges River Dolphins, etc. This is a richly populated National Park with the most number of Royal Bengal Tigers that thrive in the mangrove forests and swim in saltwater ravines.
Rajaji National Park is a newly found Tiger reserve with a good number of tigers that can be easily spotted during a Tiger Safari. The national park is the second to Jim Corbett National park in the same state, Uttarakhand.
