Kyler Edwards poured in 22 points that included a 5-for-6 showing on 3-pointers to help No. 23 Texas Tech to an easy 72-52 victory over visiting Iowa State on Saturday afternoon in Big 12 Conference play in Lubbock, Texas.
Texas Tech led by six points at the half but Iowa State cut the deficit to 29-27 on a jumper by Michael Jacobson at the 17:28 mark of the second half. The Red Raiders responded with a 12-2 run, keyed by nine points by Davide Moretti, to assume a 41-29 advantage. The Cyclones never got closer than seven points over the final 12 minutes.
Any potential suspense was defused by a 14-0 run by the Red Raiders beginning with 9:01 to play that netted them a 64-40 lead.
Moretti added 17 points for Texas Tech (12-5, 3-2 Big 12), which won its second straight game. Terrence Shannon Jr. returned after missing the past two games with a back injury and scored 11 points, hitting all four of his shots from the floor for the Red Raiders.
Tyrese Haliburton led the Cyclones with 13 points and Jacobson added 10. Iowa State (8-9, 1-4) fell for the second straight outing and for the fifth time in its past six games.
The Red Raiders never trailed, building as much as a nine-point lead through the first half on two separate occasions before settling for a 27-21 advantage at halftime.
Texas Tech outshot the Cyclones 47.6 percent to 31.3 percent over the first 20 minutes, got eight points from Edwards and led despite committing 13 turnovers in the half. It helped that Iowa State went 0-for-13 from beyond the arc. Haliburton's eight points paced the Cyclones and kept them within reach.
The Cyclones missed their first 15 3-pointers in the loss before Haliburton's long-distance basket with 12:09 to play brought Iowa State to within 43-34. They finished 3 of 22 from beyond the arc.
